Self-care is a foreign word to us as women and mothers. We are made to care for others and forget about ourselves; or raised to believe that if we choose to have children, that is our end all, be all for the rest of our lives. Well, I am here to tell you that if momma ain’t happy nobody’s happy, so ladies let’s get our self-care on.
So what exactly is self-care?
Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept, in theory, it’s something we very often overlook. Good self-care is key to improved mood and reduced anxiety. It’s also key to a good relationship with oneself and others. Source of Definition
Today I am going to look at two very important areas of self-care, body, and mind. As women and mother’s we need to be strong and well rested because believe you/me we are some busy people.
First, let’s talk about the body, there are three things we need, healthy food, plenty of sleep, and to get up and move. Now I know that it is hard with the lives we live to be able to do it. So, here are a few tips to get you started, one make a schedule and stick to it. We block out time for everything, after all, we do it for work, the kids, hell even date night. So do it for you, you deserve it after all since you are the heart and soul of this world. Two, try to move every day, even if it just going to get the mail or standing up to stretch. I have to admit I am really bad at this one, but I am really working on it. Three, make sure you, a. Drink a glass of water first thing after you get up, since by that time you are dehydrated and b. an hour later eat something with some protein. Finally, make sure you get at least six to eight hours of sleep. Now it really doesn’t have to be at night, just within a twenty-four hour period.
Now, we move to the mind, we as women are always thinking about something and some of us (like me) have racing thought that get in the way of work and sleep. So what do we do, well first, we do a brain dump and write it all down? No matter how silly, crazy, or stupid you might think it is and set it aside. We will get back to that later. Another thing to do is make time to just do nothing, I know that’s hard, but you will feel so much better when it’s done. My nothing is binge-watching something on Netflix or playing Minecraft or Bejeweled. You can also pick up a hobby, like reading or crafts. I love to go to my craft room turn on some music and get lost in my project. I could be down there for hours and not even realize it. Oh, and back to the brain dump, after a few hours or a day go back to your list and do three things. One, separate work from home, two, priorities each list, finally, throw out the one that just doesn’t go with your passion or purpose.
